I'm a very lucky movie lover to have a mother who loves movies just as much. Nearly every call home to mom involves talking about the latest movies we've seen; recently, she shared about seeing The Avengers with my brother and how she's planning to see it again with my dad. Yeah, she's pretty awesome, and some of my taste certainly hinges on her tutelage. When she showed me The Sound of Music in first grade, I developed my first Hollywood crush (on Julie Andrews), an infatuation that still remains to this day.
I also owe some of the worst movies I've ever seen to her. Because she wanted to, I tagged along to such stinkers as Christmas with the Kranks, Did You Hear About the Morgans? (in which we shared a rousing, disruptive bit of can't-hold-it-in laughter during the utterly ridiculous climax), and, most recently, New Year's Eve, one of the banes of cinephiles everywhere, myself (and my mom) included. It should be noted that she never enjoys these movies, and that when it comes to mediocre chick flicks we share, I tend to like them better. And, God bless her, she returns the favor by going to movies with me that she has no interest in seeing, such as Cars 2 last summer.
As a frequent movie-goer, I often prefer to also go solo, so as to easily observe my exact movie routine, sit exactly where I like, and not have to ward off distraction from my fellow viewers. But my mom is the #1 exception to the rule. I would always take going to a movie with her over going stag, and many wonderful summer days have been passed in the cool of the theater laughing and crying by my mama's side. I can't wait to share more movie memories with her in the years to come, which will hopefully include taking her to a premiere of my movie someday.
So Happy Mother's Day to my amazing mama, and all the other mamas reading this blog.
And not just from me:
I love you and your mama!
