The Hobbit is Now a Trilogy

After weeks of rumors, Peter Jackson has confirmed that The Hobbit will now be comprised of three films, rather than two, as was the original plan.  Some fans are crying foul, wondering why one comparatively slim novel is being adapted into as many movies as the entire Lord of the Rings trilogy, but keep in mind that the films don't only cover The Hobbit, but also include extra material released in appendices and such that help fill in gaps in the story, such as what Gandalf gets up to when he leaves Bilbo and the dwarves for some of the book.

There's not yet a title or release date, but I imagine Warner Bros. will follow the Lord of the Rings release pattern and hit three consecutive Decembers.  It's a smart move for the studio, which has recently wrapped up two of its biggest franchises with the final Harry Potter and Dark Knight movies.  The Hobbit will now fill 50% more tentpole slots.

Here's Jackson's statement, from his Facebook page:

It is only at the end of a shoot that you finally get the chance to sit down and have a look at the film you have made. Recently Fran, Phil and I did just this when we watched for the first time an early cut of the first movie - and a large chunk of the second. We were really pleased with the way the story was coming together, in particular, the strength of the characters and the cast who have brought them to life.  All of which gave rise to a simple question: do we take this chance to tell more of the tale? And the answer from our perspective as the filmmakers, and as fans, was an unreserved ‘yes.'

We know how much of the story of Bilbo Baggins, the Wizard Gandalf, the Dwarves of Erebor, the rise of the Necromancer, and the Battle of Dol Guldur will remain untold if we do not take this chance.  The richness of the story of The Hobbit, as well as some of the related material in the appendices of The Lord of the Rings, allows us to tell the full story of the adventures of Bilbo Baggins and the part he played in the sometimes dangerous, but at all times exciting, history of Middle-earth.

So, without further ado and on behalf of New Line Cinema, Warner Bros. Pictures, Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer, Wingnut Films, and the entire cast and crew of “The Hobbit” films, I’d like to announce that two films will become three.

It has been an unexpected journey indeed, and in the words of Professor Tolkien himself, "a tale that grew in the telling."

Cheers,

Peter J

  1. I really wish they had kept it to two films, but maybe they'll be great as a trilogy after all.

By the way, I've just given you an award! If you want to accept it, stop by my blog. http://classicblanca.blogspot.com/2012/07/the-liebster-blog-award.html

    1. It seems like two would've been enough, but I trust Jackson enough when it comes to Middle-Earth that I imagine the third will be a wholly satisfying film in its own right.

And thanks much! I'll get to it in the week to come.
