Jason Reitman is back with his second movie of the year (the first being Labor Day, which I quite liked, but most hated). Based on the novel by Chad Kultgen, Men, Women & Children takes a look at the way technology defines, undercuts, and enhances our relationships.
I love the way the characters' online interactions and messages pop up in this trailer - it's a relief that everything looks authentic - showing the secret lives that are unfolding around us at every moment. Whenever someone is looking down at their phone, escaping for a moment into the boundless digital world, he or she may be becoming someone else entirely. At our fingertips, every second, we have the opportunity to be someone else, which is a thrilling, terrifying power. I think Reitman is the right person to explore that power, especially if he brings the same edgy perspective on the fragility of identity that he employed in Young Adult.
Reitman serves as co-writer alongside Erin Cressida Wilson (apparently only a man and woman wrote this script; no child writer got to be onboard). The cast includes Rosemarie DeWitt, Adam Sandler, Judy Greer, Jennifer Garner, Ansel Elgort, and Dean Norris.
Men, Women & Children will play the Toronto International Film Festival before opening in limited release October 3, with a wide release following two weeks later.
