Big Eyes Trailer

Tim Burton has been in a bit of a slump lately.  His last good movie was Frankenweenie.  His last great movie was Sweeney Todd, which hit theaters almost seven years ago.  The colorful junk Burton has churned out since has only conjured a muted echo of the once-great director's finest, iconic work. Luckily, his latest looks a far cry better than Alice in Wonderland and Dark Shadows.

Big Eyes is a bit of a departure for Burton, at least in its casting.  Regular collaborators Johnny Depp and Helena Bonham Carter are nowhere to be seen.  Instead, Amy Adams fills the role of painter Margaret Keane, whose paintings won great acclaim in the 1950s, but whose husband (Christoph Waltz) took credit for the work.  Jason Schwartzman, Krysten Ritter, Danny Huston, and Terence Stamp costar.

The greatest cause for excitement, though, is that Big Eyes is scripted by Scott Alexander and Larry Karaszewski, who also wrote Burton's best film to date, Ed Wood.  That the writers and director of that film are collaborating on another biopic is cause for anticipation, indeed.

That the film is being distributed by The Weinstein Company on Christmas Day suggests that the film may be gunning for Oscar attention, too.  Hopefully it deserves it.
