Mr. Holmes Trailer

Sherlock Holmes is one of those characters who's always hovering somewhere in the collective pop culture consciousness, but in recent years, his prominence has been particularly notable.  Robert Downey Jr. and Benedict Cumberbatch have recently played the character, receiving lots of money and acclaim in the process (one could argue Sherlock opened the doors for Cumberbatch to become such a ubiquitous star and, now, Oscar nominee).

Now, Bill Condon tackles the character in a more original fashion, catching up with the famed detective as he battles the ailments of old age, his mind not as sharp a trap as it once was.  Mr. Holmes reteams the director with his Gods and Monster star Ian McKellen and his Kinsey star Laura Linney.  McKellen's Holmes is living a quiet life but is haunted by an unsolved case involving a beautiful woman, which pulls him back in.  The film looks to be a showcase for the peerless McKellen, who has somehow never won an Oscar despite his storied career.  Perhaps that could change here.

This trailer is a bit odd, with so many cuts in such a short span of time.  But what peeks we get suggest a solid movie.  (Also, anyone else find the title treatment similar to Mr. Turner?)

Mr. Holmes lacks a US release date, but it should open sometime this year.
