Darren Aronofsky Takes on Wolverine

The X-men movies haven't been the most consistent super-franchise out there, but it looks like the series may be getting back on track.  Wolverine improved slightly over the wildly uneven third entry, and for the origin story follow-up, Darren Aronofsky (Requiem for a Dream, this year's Black Swan) is taking the reigns.  It's a bold change for the series, yes, but ever more so for Aronofsky, whose work delves into dark places - to this day, Requiem for a Dream is probably the hardest movie to watch that I've seen, and this coming from a guy who sat through Antichrist.

I can definitely see this working, though.  Jackman has expressed that this chapter will be very different, and I'm hoping that different=better.  Aronofsky knows how to create complex characters; just take a look at Mickey Rourke's work in The Wrestler.  Wolverine can certainly benefit from his touch.  Hopefully Aronofsky will lead Jackman deeper into the character's psyche, exploring the monster within.  It's hard to imagine him not, really.

Personally, what's most exciting about this announcement is that Jackman and Aronofsky are re-teaming. Their last collaboration, The Fountain, remains one of my favorite films of all-time, and it features Jackman's most impressive work to date.  Hopefully his full range will be on display when he dons the claws again; the franchise needs to be rejuvenated, and it seems to me that Aronofsky is the right one to do the honors.
