In the realm of literary adaptations, there's rarely been a better pairing of director and source material than David Fincher tackling Stieg Larsson's blockbuster crime thriller The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo. The Swedish trilogy of films did a fantastic job of bringing the books to the big screen, and Noomi Rapace's now-iconic take on heroine Lisbeth Salander will be hard for Rooney Mara (who worked with Fincher on The Social Network) to match, though the glimpses of her performance in this generously lengthy trailer suggest that she is up to the task.
There's little question that The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo will be one of the year's best films, but there is much debate about whether the Academy will embrace such raw, visceral subject matter. Fincher's most-nominated films have been his "tamer" work, the fantasy-romance The Curious Case of Benjamin Button and his Facebook masterpiece, so it will be interesting to see if this return to his former grittiness - as seen in Se7en and Zodiac - can be embraced.
Based on the promise of the trailer and the immense talent of everyone involved, I expect it will be.
