The Good
-The first teaser trailer for next year's much anticipated adaptation of The Hobbit will premiere before the end of the year. The teaser will likely debut in front of The Adventures of Tintin, on which Hobbit helmer Peter Jackson serves as producer.
-Ever since Toy Story, movie-goers have grown to expect delightful animated shorts before their Pixar features, and Disney is expanding the practice to their other movies. A new Toy Story, Small Fry, short will precede next week's The Muppets, which a short taking place in the Tangled universe, called Tangled Ever After, will premiere before the 3-D rerelease of Beauty and the Beast in January.
-After the unfortunate, colorful misstep that was Alice in Wonderland, Tim Burton seems to be back on track. In addition to his adaptation of the supernatural soap opera Dark Shadows, as well as his stop-motion projects Frankenweenie and The Addams Family, Burton is now considering adapting Miss Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children for the big screen. The novel uses photography to compliment a tale of a sixteen year-old boy who explores the ruins of an orphanage that may have once housed dangerous children, including the protagonist's grandfather. It sounds like the perfect source material for Burton to bring to life.
-Director David Fincher and screenwriter Eric Roth, who previously collaborated on The Curious Case of Benjamin Button, will likely team up again on an adaptation of Cleopatra: A Life, starring Angelina Jolie as the famous Egyptian pharaoh. Fincher's next film is The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo, while Eric Roth's is Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close.
-Slumdog Millionaire and 127 Hours screenwriter Simon Beaufoy might adapt Hunger Games sequel Catching Fire, which is currently slated for a November 2013 release. The Hunger Games comes out March 23.
-Cameron Crowe's (Almost Famous) latest, We Bought a Zoo starring Matt Damon, will play in select theaters for a special sneak preview Saturday, November 26. Oscar talk can then commence or cease (I'm putting my money on the latter).
-Angelina Jolie's directorial debut, In the Land of Blood and Honey, will be released in the official language of Bosnia, BHS. It's a bold move considering Jolie shot the film in both BHS and English, and it seems like a choice that puts artistic integrity before commercial gain, which is always refreshing, especially when a big star such as Jolie is involved.
-These posters:
-Bradley Cooper was named People Magazine's Sexiest Man Alive of 2011. Cooper's a good-looking guy, but come on, we all know 2011 belongs to Ryan Gosling.
-The Michael Jackson estate is considering a biopic about the late King of Pop. Perhaps all the controversy and ugliness are still too fresh in my mind for me to garner any excitement about the possible project.
The Ugly
-Ricky Gervais will return as host for the 2012 Golden Globes, which will surely be fun to watch, but also potentially uncomfortable considering how Gervais's offensive brand of humor proved so upsetting for many during last year's broadcast.
