John Carter is one of Disney's tentpole releases for next year, and I've found myself vacillating wildly on how I feel about the adaptation of the Edgar Rice Burroughs novels. The plot - a former Civil War captain leaves his body in Arizona and travels to Mars - is goofy enough as it is. The trailer didn't do much to assuage my misgivings, and this new poster isn't doing much for me either (it's a bit too Prince of Persia-esque, which would be fine except the two projects are nothing alike).
But John Carter still ranks as one of the movies I'm most looking forward to next year. Why? It all comes down to the director, Andrew Stanton, who's made a name for himself at Pixar, most notably for directing Finding Nemo and my all-time favorite movie, WALL-E. Stanton is the only person I've ever written a fan letter to - I never received a response, sadly - and I have supreme faith in his story-telling abilities. True, his work thus far has been in the animated realm, but I can't see that mattering much. His directorial vision is stunning and clear, and I can't wait to see what he brings to a project that, without him, I would likely dismiss.
