I normally stay away from watching clips of movies online, instead waiting for proper trailers. But when I'm as excited for a movie as I am for Paul Thomas Anderson's follow-up to There Will Be Blood, The Master, I'm willing to be a little more flexible.
I doubted the movie would even see a release this year, but it's due to hit theaters October 12, and I couldn't be happier. The film stars Philip Seymour Hoffman as a veteran who starts a new religion (with supposedly strong parallels to Scientology) and Joaquin Phoenix as a drifter who becomes his right-hand man. The film marks Phoenix's return to acting proper after his strange foray into performance art as life, I'm Still Here. This clip features his character, and it looks like a knock-out performance for him, a real return to form.
The beautiful cinematography and great score from Johnny Greenwood (who also scored There Will Be Blood) suggest that this will be a worthy follow-up to that masterpiece, which is one of my all-time favorite movies.
The Master also costars Amy Adams and Laura Dern. Expect big things. Big, Oscar-y things.
