Les Miserables Trailer

This is what I've been waiting for.

There's nothing like a big-screen musical, and we finally have a trailer for Tom Hooper's take on Les Miserables, his follow-up to the multiple Oscar-winning The King's Speech.  Starring Hugh Jackman, Russell Crowe, Anne Hathaway, Amanda Seyfried, and Eddie Redmayne, it looks and sounds like Hooper is doing this right.  Instead of having actors lip-sync, as it typical for the genre, the actors will be singing live.  Some scenes in Moulin Rouge! were made in similar fashion more than a decade ago and remains one of the most vivid, exciting, and plain best movie musicals in recent memory.  To have an entire movie filmed with live singing is a thrilling prospect.

Also exciting: instead of hampering with the libretto too much and making the musical less musical, all of the film's dialogue will be sung.  Les Miserables looks to unapologetically celebrate its musical identity, and for a genre junkie like me, there's no better possible state of affairs.

For more about the film, check out this article from the USA Today.

Les Miserables comes to theaters December 14.
