Cloud Atlas Trailer

Andy and Lana Wachowski (The Matrix Trilogy) and Tom Tykwer (Run Lola Run) team up for Cloud Atlas, a star-studded adaptation of David Miller's novel, which folds six separate narratives into one sprawling epic, as characters in each successive narrative observe the one that came before, whether through a journal, letters, or through other means.

Based on this lengthy international trailer, it looks like Cloud Atlas could be a masterpiece, dealing with a checklist of weighty themes (seriously, everything from life and death to love and courage - this movie has it all!) with the visual flair that you'd expect from these filmmakers.  Or it could be a bloated, disjointed clunker, too confusing with the actors playing multiple roles and with stories so seemingly disparate.

I, for one, am hoping for, and even expecting, the former.  The centuries spanning scope and multiple roles for some of the actors have me thinking of Darren Aronofsky's The Fountain, one of my favorite movies of all time.  Of course, Cloud Atlas also looks far more complicated than that comparatively simple triptych, so it could be a far deal messier.

Either way, it should be a joy to see this cast in action.  Tom Hanks, Halle Berry, Jim Broadbent, Ben Whishaw, Hugh Grant, Susan Sarandon, and Hugo Weaving star, among others.

Cloud Atlas opens October 26.  Plenty of time for me to read the book beforehand.  Or maybe I'll go in blind.
