Yann Martel's Life of Pi is a book that, in many ways, defies adaptation. It's a character study that takes place mainly on a lifeboat in the middle of the ocean, and most of the characters are animals. It seems like a daunting cast, but such unfilmable stories sometimes make for the best movies (just look at 127 Hours two years ago). And in the able hands of Ang Lee (Brokeback Mountain), Life of Pi should be able to capture the strange grandiosity and dark humanity of the story. If nothing else, this trailer promises a feast for the eyes.
Life of Pi comes to theaters November 21.
