Ever since Alice in Wonderland decimated the box office, fairy tale re-imaginings have been all the rage in Hollywood. Some have fared well (Snow White and the Huntsman is still raking in the dough, enough to have a sequel in the works), while others have deservedly tanked (the less said about Red Riding Hood, the better).
Disney is hoping to have a hit with its Wizard of Oz prequel, Oz the Great and Powerful, which chronicles the transformation of Oscar the Kansan into the titular wizard. James Franco stars, with a great supporting cast including Michelle Williams, Rachel Weisz, and Mila Kunis. Zach Braff is also in there, but I won't knock the movie for his inclusion.
Notably, this is just one of three new Oz tales in the works; there are also two animated films in the works. It'll be interesting to see if there's room at the box office for all of them.
With this beautiful, nostalgic poster, I'm hoping Disney does this one right, and doesn't settle for the vacuous beauty of Tim Burton's trip to Wonderland. I have a sneaking suspicion that director Sam Raimi and crew might have a magical winner up their sleeves.
Oz the Great and Powerful opens March 8, 2013.
