The Academy's shortlist of contenders for Best Documentary Feature is out today, and while a lot of great movies are present, a few of my favorites are sadly MIA. The possible nominees are:
Client 9: The Rise and Fall of Eliot Spitzer
Enemies of the People
Exit through the Gift Shop
Gasland
Genius Within: The Inner Life of Glenn Gould
Inside Job
The Lottery
Precious Life
Quest for Honor
Restrepo
This Way of Life
The Tillman Story
Waiting for “Superman”
Waste Land
William Kunstler: Disturbing the Universe
Waiting for "Superman" and Inside Job still seem like the front-runners to me, and two of the other slots will likely be filled by Restrepo and The Tillman Story (which I'm embarrassed I forgot in my rundown of the category a few weeks ago). The fifth slot is hard to call, since I'm not familiar with quite a few of these films, but I would guess either The Lottery (which is another educational documentary, so its chances could be hurt by Waiting for "Superman"'s hype) or crowd-pleaser, all-around-awesome Exit Through the Gift Shop, one of the most fascinating and entertaining docs of the year.
I'm saddened to see Joan Rivers: A Piece of Work, Catfish, and Waking Sleeping Beauty not make the cut, but at least Countdown to Zero missed out, too. Looks like we'll have a good race on our hands.
