Django Unchained Trailer

There's a new trailer in town for Quentin Tarantino's plantation-era South-set Western (Tarantino refers to the film as a "Southern"), Django Unchained, and it continues to be one of the best-looking movies yet to come this year.  The story follows a freed slave (Jamie Foxx) who teams with a bounty hunter (Christoph Waltz) to rescue his wife (Kerry Washington) from a wily plantation owner (Leonardo DiCaprio) who makes his slaves fight in gladiatorial battles.  That's just the start of the all-star cast, which also includes Jonah Hill, Samuel L. Jackson, and Amber Tamblyn.

Django Unchained looks to be quintessential Tarantino.  It's beautifully stylized, funny, and irreverent, and the dialogue is pointed and sometimes cleverly anachronistic.  That shot of blood splattering on the cotton is already on the verge of being iconic.

One of the last big sights-unseen going into awards season (along with Les Miserables and The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey), I expect Django Unchained could feature prominently.  Maybe this is Tarantino's year to take Best Director?

It seems unlikely given the competition, but he's one of the most talented auteurs in Hollywood, and he certainly deserves a directing Oscar at some point.

Django Unchained hits theaters Christmas Day.
