Golden Globes Predictions

Tomorrow night, Amy Poehler and Tina Fey host what will surely be a hilarious Golden Globes, and the show should fit this season's theme of being hard to predict.  The Hollywood Foreign Press Association loves to reward big moneymakers and big stars, though in recent years they've sometimes gone for the quality of the film, rather than the quantity of dollars at the box office.

So, if you're entering some sort of Golden Globes pool, you may as well throw darts at a spinning board.  The Drama side of things is the harder to predict, since Argo and Zero Dark Thirty feel like they've fallen a peg since being ignored by the directors branch of the Academy, though there's no correlation between the Globes and the Oscars.  My gut says that Argo may be the HFPA's cup of tea; it's entertaining, has its share of stars, it made lots of money, and it's an extremely well-made film. Across all the categories, the HFPA will be able to spread the love, like they did last year, with few films taking home more than one award.  That's why I'm predicting Kathryn Bigelow to take Best Director for Zero Dark Thirty.  Last year, Martin Scorsese took Director for Hugo while The Descendants and The Artist won the Best Picture trophies.

On the Musical/Comedy side, I expect Les Miserables will win over Silver Linings Playbook, as musicals tend to fare really well with the HFPA  (Sweeney Todd and Dreamgirls are recent winners).  Silver Linings Playbook will easily take home a Best Actress trophy for Jennifer Lawrence, though.  And it could even take Picture and Actor, too.

What I'm saying is, I have no idea what's happening tomorrow night.  Which is really, really fun.

My predictions:

Best Picture - Drama: Argo
Best Actor - Drama: Daniel Day-Lewis, Lincoln
Best Actress - Drama: Jessica Chastain, Zero Dark Thirty
Best Picture - Musical/Comedy: Les Miserables
Best Actor - Musical/Comedy: Hugh Jackman, Les Miserables

Best Supporting Actor: Leonardo DiCaprio, Django Unchained
Best Supporting Actress: Anne Hathaway, Les Miserables
Best Director: Kathryn Bigelow, Zero Dark Thirty
Best Screenplay: Tony Kushner, Lincoln
Best Original Score: Mychael Danna, Life of Pi
Best Original Song: "Skyfall," Skyfall
Best Foreign Language Film: Amour
Best Animated Film: Brave
